DEAR MR KILMER

SYNOPSIS OF CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1

Richard , Gus , and Pa went to deer hunting early in the morning before the sunrise.Them has prepared with their on sniper. After a couple of hour in waiting the deer to shoot , Gus has saw a deer which is big almost 50 m from them.Gus want to shoot the deer , but his father denied it.His father want Richard to shoot the deer by himself but it strayed.

Gus is a terrific athelete in the school meanwhile Richard loves farming.Gus protested because Richard hated sports.After dinner . Pa and Gus started talk about sports.Richard went to the kitchen to help his sister Angie who is taking care of the house after their mother die.In the eye Richard maybe remembering  his brothers who was killed in a war in CUBA.

Richard went to his room and take a piece of paper and he start write a poem to express himself. Richard write about a deer that Richard was strayed in shot when their hunting .Richard closed his eye and remember what had happened.



Chapter 2

April arrived . one morning toward the end of April, Mrs Hansen walked in front of her class of eighteen students and opened up slender book."I'd like to begin today's class with a poem ," she announced.Lewis and Harry Carver which is troublemaker groaned.After class Richaed asked Mrs Hansen what book she had read from. She said it was called Trees and Other Poems and that she would gladly lend him her copy.

As Richard left school at the end of the day , he saw one of the girls from his grad satnding alone which is Hannah schermer.
what's the matter. Hannah?" he asked. 
"Nothing," Hannah said.
But even though Richard saw some that someone had scrawled the words 'Dirty Hun' all over the book cover.Richard weird , why someone do like that to the nice girl like Hannah."Somebody did a rotten thing to Hannah schermer," Richard called out to the students. "they wrote 'Dirty hun' all over her cover book ,Richard upset.Who cares what they call it?" Harry said. "It's still Hun food. It's unpatriotic to serve it while there's a war against Germany.After richard read , Richard got out a pencil and a piece of paper and started to write a poem .Richard folded up the letter , put it in an enveloppe, and sealed it.then he post it to Joyce Kilmer.he not really xpect an answer from Joyce Kilmer.



Chapter 3


Chapter 3

A terrible incident has happen at the tavern own by Hannah Schermers parents.It has been vandelised.To insteal good values in students,Mrs Hansen encourags her students to sign a card to expressing their sympathy for Hannah and her family.Mrs Hansen shocked at the protest by more vocal student and the culture of fear created by the class bullies which stop some sincere students from signing.In the end,only Richard sign the card.Richard action caused the students taunt him for supporting the German.Richard approaches his teacher and asked for the card and he want to personally delivered it to the Schermers.Abruptly,Richard was attacked by Abner and Harry but he manages to win the fight.Richard feels terrible as he wals home and keep pondering about the people of TurtleLake.On his way home,he climbs an old oak tree to watch a train pass by.He sees passanger happily travelling.As he reaches home,Angie running excitedly towards him with news that he has received a letter from New York.It is from Joyce Kilmer.


Chapter 4

Joyce kilmer letter to Richard consist plane simple answer and advice. He encourages him to pursue his poetic dreams with courage and confidence.He invite Richards to write again and sent him one of his poem.that night , Richard tried to be braved to share about the letter to his family.Pa,Gus and Angie didn't show any excitement and they do not know who Joyce Kilmer is.

Richard went to his room to reply Mr.Kilmer's letter. Gus comes to the room and teases Richard on his sissy poems.Gus also advices him to try to fit in with his friends.

Next morning Richard post to see Mrs Hansen to tell her about the letter.She is very impressed.Richards shows her a few of his favourite poems and she helps to select one to sent to Mr Kilmer. Mrs Hansen encourages him to share the letter to the class but Richard is not ready yet. Richard meets Hannah right after he cames out from Mrs Hansen room. She apologised Richard on what she has done the last time they met. She all shares her feeling and problems with Richard.Richard climbes the oak tree again and sees the train with a load of merry soldiers on their way to war. Richard is sad thinking about Mr kilmer and otto,the Hannah's brother.

Chapter 5

Start with Savanah on working houses all day,causing John to find something to do by himslef. John asked his dad about his mom.The only information that was told though was that they met at a dinner and she was pretty. John also told his dad that savanah wanted to meet him .

Chapter 6

Richard and Joyce Kilmer continued writing to each other . Sometimes Joyce Kilmer would offer Richard some suggestion for his poem. In september Mr Kilmer wrote that he was arrived in France and the soldier were frightened. Richard feared that the war may not be over after his brother finished school as Gus was interested to join the army . He is worried that Pa would suffer terribly if anything were to happen to Gus. School began and and Mrs Hansen annouced taht the class would be putting on patriotic programme to help Liberty Bonds to help raise money to the war.The programme had a special part as one of the female studentd would be chosen based on essay antitled " How we can help the war effort right here in turtle lake "

The boy with the best essay would play the part of doughboy and wear Khaki uniform.Richard decided to write about exchanging letters with the soldier.During lunch, the students discussed about who should be lady Liberty. Some of them said means thing about the other students.Richard was shocked when Peggy Mason said that it would no be patriotic if  Mrs Hansen selected Hannah , even she deserved it.

A few days later , Richard was annouced as the boy with the best essay. Hannah had won the role of lady Liberty . The class was shocked.Hannah then read her essay to the class. She said the real enemy wasn't Germany or other countries but the war itself. When Hannah finished, Richard the only student who apploud.

Chapter 7

During the walk that Utterson and Enfield take, they find themselves before that same door which prompted Enfield to relate the story of his encounter with Hyde.

Chapter 8 

Pa told Richard that Abner's Father come by and accused Richard for being unpatriotic and supported the Germans. Pa wants Richard not to be contrary with the ordinary people feel. He blames Richard's poetry fill his head with foolish ideas. p words almost make Richard cry.

At school, most students ignores Richard and make malicious comments from time to time. He spend more time with Hannah and her family. The Schermers seem to understand him more.

Richard receives a sad letter from Mr. Kilmer who misses his family during christmast. To cheer him up, the send him Hannah's bake cookies and a scarf knit by Hannah's mother. mr Kilmer writes that he really appreciates it.

In History class, Mr higby announces a major victory over Central Power, and this brings happy mood to the class.

The end with a picnic for everyone by the lake. Richard date Hannah. They talk about the places that Hannah had been. Richard hopes he has the chance to visit the places too. They also share their worry about the war.

Richard carves a heart shape with the initial R and H on an oak tree. Suddenly , someone from the bushes fling a stone at Hannah's foot and cause it to bleed-Another reminder of the reality of war and prejudice.

Chapter 9

Pa was dismayed when Gus announced that he was enlisted and chosen for the army. He will go for basic training the next day. Pa accused him of being lazy and this is just an excuse to run away from the farm duties.

Pa's angry outburst and relate about his brother, Who was killed in Cuba silences Gus. Richard tried to talk his father, but he was unresponsive. Richard begins to understand Hannah's worry about her brother Otto, who join the army earlier. Pa is more silent after Gus left. Richard finds comfort visiting the Schermers and writing poems.

One afternoon, Richard received another letter from Mr. Kilmer. Richard thought that this is the kindest and warmest letter the poet had ever written to him.There are many advices and encouragements in it. He writes a reply, and asks how can a poem make the world a better place. He feels the urgency to post the letter.

On his way to the post office, he stops by Hannah's house. He calls her to accompany him to the post office. When Hannah opens the door, he could tell from her expression that something awful had happened. "Your friend, Mr.Kilmer, has beeen killed", Hannah says

Chapter 10

The news of Mr. Kilmer's death is in the newspaper. the headline "beloved American poet Killed in Battle." There is a picture of Mr. Kilmer. Richard gazes at the smiling face of his poet mentor and friend, for the first time. The artile recounts and circumtances of Kilmer's death and how his comrades bury him in France.

Richard is too shocked to cry, but when he realises that he unposted letter is still in his pocket, reality strikes. He excused himself from the Schermers and run to his favourite oak tree where he cries freely.

Richard composes poem "in Memory Of Sergeant Joyce Kilmer", expressing sadness over the loss of a world rhyme and song he had treasured. He shares the poem with the schermers the next day and they insist that more people should it read. The poem is touching and beautiful. Many families in Turtle Lake also lost their loved ones and richard 's poem would mean a lot to them.

Richard agrees, so he and Hannah took the poem to the Turtle Lake Weekly" office to be published. However, Richard fears what Pa's reaction if his poem is printed.
